About The Nigger of the Narcissus
“My task... is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you feel - it is, before all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything. If I succeed, you shall find there, according to your deserts, encouragement, consolation, fear, charm, all you demand - and, perhaps, also that glimpse of truth for which you have forgotten to ask” Conrad, from the preface to "The Nigger of the Narcissus. "Narcissus was a real ship, a pretty Clyde built semi-clipper and Conrad sailed on her as second mate. Conrad's descriptions of life on the “heartless sea” and the operation of sailing ships are indisputably work of the highest authenticity and rank amongst the canon of must-reads for anyone seriously interested in the subject. Please Note: This book is easy to read in true text, not scanned images that can sometimes be difficult to decipher. The Microsoft eBook has a contents page linked to the chapter headings for easy navigation.
